ASTRONOMICAL OBSERVATORY
Monte San Pietro
Monte San Pietro has developed around the basin of the river Lavino.
The inhabitants are about 10,000, concentrated in major centers, particularly in the
locality of
Calderino.
Monte San Pietro is one of the Italian"City of Wine" : the presence of numerous
wineries and vineyards DOC makes this area the focus of wine production in the hills of
Bologna.
Monte San Pietro is also "City Chestnut" thanks to the traditions of the chestnut,
once a staple food in these areas which are still rich in beautiful chestnut, present mainly
in
the area of Mount Shepherd, where is concentrated the production of a variety of well-known
brown quality ..
In this area there is therefore a rich selection of local products including various meats,
beef, truffles, mushrooms, cherries, plums and Parmigiano Reggiano.
City of the chestnut
In the valleys of Samoggia and Lavino the local production more characteristic is the
chestnut.
This product, once the "bread of the poor" is now a valuable food in great demand
abroad.
Very rich in carbohydrates and protein, chestnuts are low in fat, are also rich in minerals
and
vitamins.
Their maturation occurs between October and November.
There are different varieties of chestnuts from the botanical point of view but the best
known
is the division between chestnuts and "marroni". To the latter variety, with
larger
fruits, no more than three for each, heart-shaped and leathery skin, Monte San Pietro
devotes
one of its historic celebrations: the Feast of roast chestnuts, scheduled on the third
Sunday in
Monte Shepherd October.
